So how do they make money selling things so cheap? Well, stores have something called loss leaders. Loss leaders are when these stores put something on sale at a big discount incentivizing us to go into their store. This is the thing you’re going to see advertised in all of their ads because it’s so cheap. The store might lose money on this loss leader, but the idea is, now that they have you in the store making a purchase you’ll be more likely to buy something else which will make up for their loss and will make the loss leader profitable. Plus keep in mind that almost every big store nowadays has their own store credit card. So they’re hoping that we will spend a lot of money on the huge sales thinking we are saving money. When actually, we’re going to be paying the store an insane amount of interest trying to pay off our entire wardrobe. Ugh I just love this sweater so much, I can’t believe I got all these clothes 40% off! Look I support businesses, but don’t be the majority. Think from the mindset of the consumer and be the provider. Don’t just be the consumer. Remember my rule of 5, if you cannot buy 5 of them, you cannot afford one of them. And third we have the Christmas business selling Christmas stuff. These are the businesses that do one thing and one thing only, sell Christmas products. So I’m based in Detroit, and about an hour or an hour and a half north of me there’s a store called Bronners which calls itself a Christmas Wonderland. This retail store only Christmas products. From lights, to ornaments, to Santa outfits, to decorations. They have it all. Now if you’re like me, you’re probably thinking, what kind of retail store would be open year round and only sell products that are only useful for one month out of the year. Well, these guys are estimated to do around 50 million a year in sales for Christmas products.
